LEADERS of the Namibia Albino Association recently completed a tour of Kavango East and West, Zambezi, Ohangwena, Oshana and Omusati regions to raise awareness and to observe the conditions of people living with albinism. The tour started in August and was aimed at assessing issues faced by people living with albinism as well as their families and surrounding communities. Elia Frans from Endola in the Ohangwena region says he is registered for a disability grant which he does not enjoy. "I am a person with albinism who receives money from the governments disability grant, but I do not collect it myself. The money is not being utilised by myself. I only get part of the money that is not enough to take care of myself," he said. The president of the Namibia Albino association, Joseph Ndinomupya, did an interview with the Nambain where he stated it is of great concern that most people with albinism, do not have access to disability grants, which poses a health risk. he said.
"We found most people in really bad condition, especially in the Kavango region. They have no access to disability grants because they have no identity documents, while others claim that health facilities do not really take them seriously," Ndinomupya said it is worrisome that most of the people have sores and spots on their skins, which could be avoided if they receive the right treatment. He said some travel to Windhoek for treatment and are prescribed the right medicine, but it can only be found in private pharmacies and it is very expensive. "We helped some access treatment in Windhoek last month and the medicine that was prescribed cost over N$1 000. These are people with severe cases. One person had an operation and is also receiving treatment that costs over N$12 000. We are willing to help where necessary, but we need the private sector to come on board and help us," he said. The association spoke with 462 people living with albinism who participated in the discussions and shared their concerns. Ndinomupya says serious steps will be taken against parents and families who deprive their children and family members of disability grants by not getting identity documents for them. "Make sure that your child gets a birth certificate immediately after birth. If you still have someone in the family without one, start applying for it immediately. We need to help all people with albinism because there is no reason for them to develop sores that could lead to skin cancer. This is another form of abuse," he said. He also addressed problems with discrimination & abuse. He further noted that parents, especially in rural areas, should understand that people living with albinism must be kept out of the harsh sun and urged parents to stop sending them out in the field to herd cattle, especially when they have no protective hats, cream and glasses. He urge community members that family members who misuse the disability grants, will be dealt with he and urges community members to report such cases. The association is planning to visit other regions soon and is appealing to the public to assist with funds to make the trips possible, and especially to help in buying protective material. Ndinomupya urged people living with albinism who are facing challenges to contact him on 0811456577. Food is my thing and being able to have lots of flavor and still be healthy is a big plus. So I try out recipes and tweak 'em to my delight. Recipe Yield. 8 servings Preparation time. 15 minutes Ignore it. At least 1 hour in the fridge if possible Ingredients for the slaw1 pound green cabbage (about half a medium cabbage) 1 large carrot, peeled 1/2 small white onion Ingredients for the dressing 1 tablespoon distilled vinegar 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1 tablespoon white sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon celery seeds (not celery salt) About the vinegar. Switch to cider vinegar at your own risk. I think plain white distilled works better. My favorite add-in. I first tasted this in Charleston South Carolina, and I loved it. Add 1 tablespoon of sweet pickle relish or chipped sweet pickles. Optional. Add 1/2 red or green bell pepper, sliced thin or hashed. Optional. Add 3 radishes, red or white, hot if you like, sliced thin or hashed. Optional. Add 1 small minced jalapeño if you like it hot. Chipotle powder is another way to amp it up. Horseradish, just a tablespoon in the background, is a surprising addition. Method 1) Chop the cabbage to your prefer size. I like my veggie's chunky because the added crunch 2) Whisk together the dressing in a large bowl. Add the cabbage, carrot, and onion. Cover, taste, and adjust seasonings. Chill for at least 1 hour if possible. Most of us spend over 2000 hours a year at work. Are you doing what you love? Whether we like it or not, We spend most of our time working. And when your spending most of your lifetime working why not do it with something you love. So here are 8 essential ways to get to where your trying to go in life...... 1. Have a career mission statement Make sure you are clear about what you want to accomplish with your career. Say it out loud and claim it. Write down exactly what your mission statement is and post it where you can see it every day. 2. Audit your time If you go to work every day, write down how you spend your time. Look for things that distract you or keep you from meeting your goals. Take out things that aren't productive. If you are looking for employment, take a serious look at how you spend your time. How much time do you want to spend each day, going to appointments or on the phone? How much do you need to devote to research for job interviews? Being accountable for your time, helps you get the most from each minute. 3. Make sure your online brand is accurate In today's world, prospective employers, as well as current management, use the internet and social media to track you. So, you do the work first. Google your name, make sure your profile and your brand are on point. Delete anything that doesn't represent who you are, in the best possible light. 4. Daily gratitude Whether you are struggling with a "not so great" job or you are looking for that career break, take time for daily gratitude. You can find things which you are thankful for, no matter what the circumstances. This habit will change your attitude about yourself and your career. It is humbling to acknowledge all that you do have. 5. Do not just seek approval It is easy to adjust our actions or beliefs as employees if we are looking for the support of management. You may find yourself tempted to give in to particular demands of a prospective employer, just to get the job. However, instead of seeking approval, you should focus on the impact your actions make. Will it enhance service for the customer? Do you go the extra mile to meet requirements? Approval is fleeting, but impact shapes policy. So, instead of asking yourself if the boss liked your performance, ask yourself if you did your best. Did you make a lasting impact on some part of the job? If you can say that, you are successful. 6. Reach out and often Even if you already have a job, never stop networking with business friends and contacts. New opportunities are found quicker through word of mouth, than any search engine. Keep an accurate, current list of contacts and use all of the social media to reach out and network. 7. Don't underestimate the benefits of a mentor You can never go wrong by seeking guidance from someone who has been working in the field, longer than you. Finding someone who can counsel you through challenging aspects of your career are invaluable. Don't reinvent the wheel, just find out how others in your position have handled situations. 8. You will never finish There is no perfect pinnacle to any career. There is always room to grow and expand. A career is about a journey, not reaching a certain destination. There will be another opportunity on the horizon. Always remain a student of your chosen field and be ready to grow. What are you doing to help your career? Are you doing what you love? Fast food is incredibly convenient, and usually very tasty too, but it's not always the best option for refueling our bodies. Over at comparison site, Fast Food Menu Price, there's a detailed info graphic that shows the effect of eating one of the most iconic on-the-go meals of all time: the McDonald's Big Mac.
For the first 10 minutes, everything goes brilliantly, at least on the surface. Our brains have been wired to prefer high-calorie foods (sorry, dieters) and the Big Mac provides these calories in abundance - an average Big Mac contains 540 calories, which cause our blood sugar level to shoot up. Feel-good chemicals, like the neurotransmitter dopamine, are released into the brain, and you may catch yourself thinking: "This is a tasty burger." It's from the 20-30 minute point that the downhill slide starts. The high levels of fructose corn syrup and sodium inside the bun leave us craving more of the same (and in the long term, this can lead to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease). Then the sodium - some 970 milligrams of it - causes dehydration and starts making the kidneys and heart work faster. Blood pressure rises, and you may well be tempted by a McFlurry or apple pie. According to the infographic, at the 40 minute mark, the body will probably still be craving similar types of food: losing control of your blood sugar levels makes junk food (like a chocolate bar) seem even more appealing than it normally would. The gastrointestinal tract very quickly absorbs the high volume of fructose corn syrup we mentioned earlier, further adding to your hunger pangs. From 50-60 minutes, the period of slow digestion starts in earnest. Food typically takes 24-72 hours to digest, but the grease and trans fat inside a Big Mac means the digestion time for the McDonald's signature burger can easily go beyond three days. "If you want to enjoy a Big Mac, try to keep it an occasional event," is the advice from Fast Food Menu Price. "The ingredients can cause serious harm to your body, especially when consuming them on a regular basis." The infographic has been put together using data from McDonald's own website as well as articles from LiveStrong, Blood Pressure UK, and FoodMatters. McDonald's itself doesn't recommend living solely on a diet of Big Mac and fries - treat them as an occasional treat rather than a regular meal and you'll be fine (in fact, in small doses they can actually be good for you). At least now you know exactly what you're letting your body in for. Source: Science Alert |
